So I must have done something stupid...
I ran a Creative installer that I still had on my 486 harddrive in some DOS directory. Looking at the update log it seems no files were updated.. but all of a sudden certain games (Prince Of Persia 2) and demos (some Future Crew demos) dont recognize my soundblaster anymore. The FC demo's flatout tell me this, POP2 doesnt play any of the digital soundeffects eventho I have everything configured correctly. Also in the DIAGNOSE program, the FM synthesizer music no longer plays. I've started looking around for drivers, but I seem to have high versions of most of the software I find (AWEUTIL is at version 1.35).
I'm not sure what to do.. could it have replaced some files in my SB16 directory that are causing this issue?
Any help on how I can start troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated.

Well, something's happened. Maybe look at all the drivers and see if they were recently modified, by checking on the date?
Otherwise, I'd look to download some and reinstall.

That was my first thought.. However, I cant seem to find the drivers I had loaded before.. I'll probably start fiddling around with some files. I think I have the old non PnP card - probably need to open the old gal up just to be certain. Then find out what drivers I can use for this older card and get them online... ugh..
Would the drivers on the Vogons website do the trick? Or will it all depend on how old my AWE32 might be?

download my 735MB drivers CD from the vogons drivers website... it has EVERYTHING in it you need... the latest and last versions of everything. It will save you time from hunting them down. It has taken me many hours to put that together. Those drivers and utils should get you going!

I sooooo want to! But all those drives seem to be on the MegaUpload site which is being sued by the US government right now. I did look at the MediaFire link but most of the files on there which I've tried to install, still fail to give me FM sound, let alone the discovery of my soundcard by most games. I'm trying to hunt down my own 3.5 disks that came with the sound blaster AWE32 when I bought it at the same time.
If you happen to have a better download link, please let me know.

files on vogons drivers are NOT hosted on any file sharing sites it's an independent server

Could you share a link then? All the links on the Vogons site that I tried to download/use link to public sites.

So good news & bad news I got everything to work but it took a mix and match of the drivers I downloaded. Some of the CTSB16.SYS drivers apparently dont work well with my AWE32 non PnP card as it will result in a incorrect parameter error. It might eventually have been resolved by just adding it back into my CONFIG.SYS file which it apparently was removed from. So apparently not all the driver versions will work with my Soundblaster. Funny how newer drivers arent totally backwards compatible.. Unless I'm missing something here?

which card do you have? I never had any problems with the drivers with my CT3900 if you used my CD, install the AWE32 software through the autorun menu (works in Win9x or NT4)... for the Win9x installer, it should install only the SB16 drivers, then you will have to install the AWE32 drivers and apps afterwards

I'm doing this all in DOS, rather not install Win95 on my 486.. Unless I find another old IDE harddisk that I can hook up for dual boot.
TBH I'm not 100% sure which AWE32 I have. I need to open up the case and look at the card in detail to see the CT number. Unless you know of another way for me to gather this information?
Was I right in stating that these drivers are NOT backwards compatible? It's really interesting to see older drivers work without a hitch and newer drivers giving me the error parameter issue..

my CD includes DOS drivers... there's so many things, you just have to look the most easily accessed full DOS install is the SB16 and AWE64 one on that CD
if you didn't use my CD, then it's hard to help you because there's so many release versions of the original install disks out there... I included only the best/latest, archiving the rest into floppy image files

With your previous message, I thought this evening; why not remove ALL my drivers and reinstall using your AWE32 CD image. Look and behold - my drivers are up-to-date no errors with startup and all my games work again! Thank you SO much for finding and collecting these drivers! I'm going to burn a CD that I can keep around with my 486. Now I only need to find a lot of free time so I can start playing all my old DOS games again. Might need to look for another IDE harddrive for it

keep in mind that running just the base installer does NOT install the latest drivers... you will need to install the updates and any other extra utils you want manually read carefully the readme and index files... everything you need to know is there
