Which is the "best" module to listen to General Midi game soundtracks? I've been using an SC-88 recently, but I also own an SC-55 and an SC-55 MKII, as well as a CM-300.

Should I always use the SC-88 in SC-55 mode?

55 mk II gets my vote, it's the same as the original, but has the extra polyphony. For non-Sierra games this may change depending on the game, but for Sierra, i would say a mk II is always best.

I owned an SCC-1B card back in the day (1994), so it's refreshing to listen to these soundtracks on my recently acquired SC-88 in "native" mode!

Heh. Yeah, when I first got my 8850, I listened to MIDI's and played games with it in native mode too. KQ6 sounds great on the 8850. Not all do though.

Since most (maybe all) GM soundtracks were composed using Sound Canvas so do they always sound best on that. And sometimes GM soundtracks have special GS sysex for controlling the different DSP effects that only SC (and actually most Yamaha midi modules also) correspond to.

Which games are using GS sysex?

For example "Settlers 2" show some text on the LCD on Roland modules (and also Yamaha ones if they support it).
