Alistair, could it be the software you're using to record these themes filters out controller 75?

No worries, Boogeyman. Smiley

Ari/Zemus: I'll get back to you. To be honest, that never occured to me. I've just never seen the controller appear in any VGA QuestStudios MIDI recording, as well. But I will get back to you, next few days.

Actually, what software to each of you two use?

I use Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 to record and edit. Under the recording tab I've set it to record everything.

Hee, hee. Those servers are awfully unreliable..

Been there, done that. For downloading not uploading, though.

I thought you were uploading here?

Does *anyone* know what's going on with this? I know I don't..

I WAS going to upload here, but Tom won't let me back into the server to upload the sample he had requested.

Intriguing.

Well, since no QuestStudios people of importance seem to have any comments- Boogeyman, if you ever get 'em uploaded, let us know.

Tom and the moderators (including myself) felt that it would be unfair not to give Boogeyman the opportunity to explain the situation in his own words.  He has passed on that chance, so I'll stick my neck out yet be as polite as I can.

When arranging the original upload, Tom asked Boogeyman to upload no more than 15 megabytes at a time.  Tom's FTP server is configured to throw away all data after the first 15 MB as a preventative measure against someone filling up the disk.  Boogeyman either overlooked or misunderstood this request, and tried to upload about 90 MB of files.

The KQ7 files were in the latter part of the upload, so the server automatically discarded all of those files.  Only the files towards the beginning of the upload were saved.  Of those files that Tom salvaged, most were from KQ4, and all were recorded using Macintosh internal FM synthesis, with a sound quality roughly equal to an AdLib or Sound Blaster card.

Tom explained to Boogeyman that the Quest Studios standard is to provide an optimal or enhanced soundtrack experience for each game we cover, and because we know KQ7 has a fully orchestrated MIDI soundtrack, we would prefer not to post an FM synthesis soundtrack.

Tom requested that Boogeyman try again with one single sample from King's Quest 7 on the Mac.   Boogeyman replied enigmatically that he had "tried the PC version of KQ7 but never could get the music right."

None of us understood that comment.  Tom said in the moderators' forum:  "The PC version as played through a Sound Canvas or MT-32? Or...PC speaker...or Sound Blaster?"

And after that, Tom closed the ftp upload.

Right, this all makes sense. I guessed as much that this would be the case. Thanks for clueing us in, Marten..

Guess you're all waiting for November, huh? I'll try and have this score completed about then. Though, given other projects it's more likely to be Christmas. But who knows. Smiley

Boogeyman, what kind of MIDI hardware did you use when you tried it on a PC? What did you mean exactly by not getting the music right?

I am pretty sure it was soundblaster, I have NO idea what hardware the Mac uses.

I have uploaded my rip to Hardhouse's FTP at RPGamers.net

I'm sure Tom and the rest of the crew tried to accomodate your request Boogeyman. But server space is always a problem at QuestStudios and your rip proved to be too huge to upload. And it is also in FM form, not GM or MT-32, which is the preferred medium here. QuestStudios doesn't have an Adlib/SoundBlaster FM archive yet although I myself have requested it not too long ago. Perhaps in time this will become a reality.

Which is what Frank will be working on in the future.  But as far as an entire library of AdLib or FM synth soundtracks, that's not one of my current goals.  I used an AdLib for quite some time...even composed a number of songs with one.  So, I have some fond memories of the card.  Several tracks for a "comparison Sierra soundcard archive" is what I would like to see here at some point.

I wonder, did anybody ever buy the IBM Music Feature?  I know AdLib's were a big seller when Sierra supported them, and they did okay with the MT-32, considering the price tag.  But I never heard much about people using the IBM card.  (Was it a card?  I never even saw one.)
