If you can't wait for the new Doom, or you're broke, but still want to play......try Doom Legacy. Created after ID released the Doom source code, and loaded with improvements.
You need a comercial, or shareware version of Doom, Ultimate Doom, or Doom2 to play.

I really want the new Doom as well, I know it's out now.  Came out 5 days ago here, looks pretty wild.

I've been playing Unreal Tournament 2004 lately... I know, it's not Doom, but it's not bad.  I can't believe Atari is still making games.  I thought they were done 15 years ago, but I guess not!

It's just the name. The Atari name is slapped on some Infogrames releases. Atari as we know them have been gone since Hasbro bought them in 1998.

I bought Doom 3, and loaded it, but haven't played more than 15 minutes of it, because of a soundcard problem.
The graphics are very detailed, but I'm not real fond of having to juggle weapons with a flashlight (so far, it's all in the dark, and very suspenseful).

Yes good point, and who knows if any of the original people are still kicking around at Atari.  T-Shirts with "Atari" on them seem to be popular now too, I've seen quite a few people running around with them.

Ok and for Doom 3, that sucks about the soundcard problem.  Something you can fix, or a bug with Doom 3?  Maybe they'll bring out a patch if it's an incompatibility issue.... and the flashlight part is *different*.  But that's not always good.

If there are, it's just coincidence... Hasbro, to my knowledge, didn't take *any* Atari employees. They bought the company for their name and IP; they trashed the hardware side immediately, too. Since this Atari isn't even Hasbro, just the name sent over to Infrogrames, there would only really be any former Atari employees there if they had left Atari at some point before to be hired there.

You can download Doom2 here but you have to pay for it... this link will take you to the Doom3 section, but the older Doom games can be selected from the menu on the left side.

http://www.idsoftware.com/games/doom/doom3/

As for downloading it for free, I have no idea where, probably not legal if it is free.

That's too bad about Atari, but hey I guess Hasboro figured it would be a good marketing thing, to "buy" a well known game company name.  Sounds like the Walmart thing, go into a small town, build a big store, kill off all the good little guys... then leave.

... and yes, UT2004 is pretty cool   Smiley

The soundcard problem was the result of updating the drivers for my Soundblaster Live.
I did a Win update and loaded the updated driver for the card, and I  didn't notice a problem until I loaded a NeverWinter Night add-on game.
At first, I thought I had a problem with the game, but after reading a messageboard, where other Soundblaster Live people were chatting about the same problem, I realized that the Win update driver had started the whole mess.
I went to the Creative labs site and downloaded the latest driver, but the problem was still there. It was irritating, but still playable.
Doom3 was not playable with even the latest drivers, so I reinstalled the orginal, old drivers and all is now well.  Strange, hmmm?

For those who don't own Doom, or Doom 2 but still want to play Doom Legacy, I believe the instructions said it would work on shareware Doom.

Good old Micro$oft.  Probably not their fault this time, but let's blame them anyway, just because they've messed up so many other things... like security (or lack of, I should say).

Yeah it's annoying, with Call of Duty (Activision/Infinity Ward) I had a problem with my video driver (ATI Radion 9700).  They actually recommended installing older versions of the driver on their website.  It was just one level, and I found a way around it by lowering the resolution and detail.  Once past that, raised it back up again, and it was fine.

Well, at least I found a way around it without having to install an old version of the driver.  That's partially the point of new versions of the drivers right, to improve things and possibly fix bugs - not create more.  And good luck trying to pin the blame on someone, the game company will blame the hardware company, and who will the hardware company blame?  Seems to be the way of the PC world nowadays.

Maybe we should go back to slates and chalk?

No, it wasn't Microsoft's fault this time. The updated driver they had, was newer driver than mine, and it was XP approved.
The even newer Creative Labs driver that I downloaded trying to fix the problem, was not an MS signed driver, but all the games tell you to go and get the very latest drivers before playing.

Almost all of the newer games that I've played, recommend lowering the soundcard acceleration, if the sound skips, stutters, or locks up the game.
I tried that with Doom3, but it didn't help.
When I first noticed the skipping sound (after the win update), I ran dxdiag to try and find the problem.
The playback on some of the card's components, was already spitting, and skipping, and this was before even running any games.
I was annoyed, but NeverWinter Nights still played, with a minimum of distortion.
Doom 3 locked up and the sound reverbed, skipped, stuttered......crashed. There was no compromise, no appeasement.
The old, original driver was reloaded, and the problem is solved, but this is really strange as the newer XP signed drivers should have been better.

Ah, yes, plug and play.
Just like George Jetson's hovercraft ,which we were supposed to be driving by now, I've still yet to see cooperation between the hardware people, and the software people so we can have true plug and play.

Well hey sounds like you know what you're doing, you figured out a way around it.  I vote for going back to slate and chalk.  So I'm finally going to get out to a computer store this weekend, pick up a copy of Doom 3.  See if it blows up my PC too.

Yeah, and I haven't seen any hover-cars either.  I'm behind on the times anyway, my car is an '83 and my bike is a '59.

I don't know why I thought of this just now, but the Amiga 2000 was a good system for it's time.  Good sound, good graphics.  That's what I first played Hero's Quest on.  Anyway now I'm way off topic.  Must be past my bedtime.

I read a review of Doom 3 on CNN.com.  They praised the game's graphics and sound, but complained that on 2 of the 3 computers they tried to run the game on, it crashed.  Unfortunately they didn't talk about what the differences were between the 3 computers they used, but hopefully if enough people complain, they'll come out with a patch.  I wish software companies would do that instead of saying, "Install an older version of this driver, and you should be fine," or, "Don't do this, and don't do that either."

Oh yeah, the part of the review that jumped out at me was they said the exact same thing as you.  They didn't enjoy changing flashlight/weapon/flashlight/weapon.  I can see why not many people will like that part, can get annoying pretty quickly.

Hey Space Quest Lover, have you played Halo?  What do you think is better:

Unreal Tournament 2004, or Halo?
